Squeaky Steps
pat hodges asks:
We recent replaced our steps to the basement with new wooden steps which have backs and are painted. The problem is they creak and pop. What can be done to stop the noise?

Answer from Tommy:
Most of the time, this problem is caused by the tread not being seated firmly against the stringer. If the underside is open it can be easily fixed by placing small wedges in any open spaces between the two members. This problem in normally avoided by using construction adhesive when the tread in installed.
